di The

Quadrifoglio Group

, sistema che combina

lampade Led e pannelli fonoassorbenti dalla forma triangolare che

possono essere alternati e composti liberamente, assecondando le

specifiche esigenze dello spazio

that permit flow management while guaranteeing maximum

luminous comfort, providing a soft down light and a controlled

dark light. For sound absorption, we thought about the classic

cardboard egg boxes once used to soundproof clubs. The

aesthetic reference comes from the sinusoidal section of the

lower surface of the sound-absorbing material, in polyester,

which contains the LEDs in the concave spaces, so that the

pattern does not influence the light flow.” Other companies, like

the Austrian firm Zumtobel, have taken a different path, starting

from the Ondaria lamp already widely used in offices, and

adapting its body to provide the same lighting performance

while making a contribution to acoustic comfort in rooms. The

people at Zumtobel explain: “The replacement of the PMMA

diffuser with one made of densely woven sound-absorbing

technical fabric, for homogeneous light emission, has made it

possible to achieve good acoustic performance. The different

available diameters allow users to obtain performance directly

proportional to the size of the installed fixture.”

Functioning and installation

The installation of sound-absorbing lighting systems starts with

careful assessment of the spaces and the activities that will

take place inside them. The best performance is provided by

suspension lamps that exploit the lower and upper surfaces

as areas of sound reduction, capturing sounds reflected from

floors, ceilings and walls.

A sound-absorbing lighting fixture can contribute to acoustic

correction in spaces, together with furnishings, curtains,

carpeting, etc. The acoustic design evaluates the overall

contribution of the elements present in spaces, estimating

– based on the functional purpose of the rooms – whether

it is necessary to insert more sound-absorbing material. For

example, in spaces where the activities require concentration,

reverb attenuation times between 0.5 and 0.8 seconds are

required.

“The lighting fixtures have precise installation specifications so

that they can function properly – Giacobone points out. – In

the case of suspension lamps, that are attached to the ceiling

and have to be parallel to the floor. They contribute to general

improvement of acoustic comfort, though in open-plan areas

or complicated layouts it may be necessary to install other

technical elements for optimal acoustic correction. Therefore

it is advisable to rely on an acoustics expert for a preliminary

study of the surfaces of the room. Flexibility for different uses

is a strong point of sound-absorbing lamps, since their refined

good looks make it possible to install them in different settings,

from the classic office to the meeting room, from shops to

restaurants to hotel halls.”
